SEBASTIAN ALAPPAT- Fossilized

January 20- February 26, 2017

Opening reception: Friday, January 20, 6-8:30pm

The Windows of the Wild Bird Fund is pleased to announce the sculpture exhibit Sebastian Alappat’s Fossilized. Inspired by his life long fascination with dinosaurs and extinct species, Alappat has reinterpreted the standard fossil. Using Whole Foods paper bags, flour, glue and water to create a custom papier-mache, the formula is then molded to form the sculptures. Once dried, the works are polyurethaned to achieve a patina like that of preserved fossilized bones.

Alappat specifically chose to upcycle (using everyday materials to create something of higher quality) to breathe life into these extinct species: Pterodactyl, Trilobite and T-Rex. Although these animals are forever gone, the common paper material emphasizes that their stories will remain as a powerful reminder of the cyclical nature of the life.

These fossils are for sale, with 50% of all sales benefiting the programs of Wild Bird Fund:

  • Pterodactyl $800
  • Trilobite $1,900
  • T-Rex $2,750
  • Watercolors $50
